Holland Power

Week Two
Site Sequence
Monday 25.07
Because I'm currently in isolation I wasn't able to make the Monday class site visit, because I couldn't make the site visit I started to explore artist models that gave me inspiration. I started to look at the class arena channel to find artists that could inspire me.

I wanted to look at some readings to influence my thinking behind this brief. Exploring ways to look deeper into different perspectives
- pushing boundaries
- different viewpoints
how exploring other artists and designers work will push my thinking and my own work when exploring the brief

Larry Bell.
Still Standing
Hauser & Wirth
This installation was created through using glass sheets, all different colours that creates a gradient effect when all being looked together. Larry explores the idea "the optic possibilities of glass as a medium." where this displays how his standing still glass exhibitions create their own meaning.

Im interested in the way this pink shaded glass is placed in a line up of blue shaded glass, but when looked at directly the pink glass camouflages into the blue gradient. This makes me think of the idea of colour theory and how different perspectives interpet what we see. This piece makes me think in how can I relate colour theory into my own thinking
- what drives this perspective?
- how can different perspectives change what we see? movement, colour lapping, how does this affect our perspection?

Death 24x a Second
Stillness and the Moving Image
by Laura Mulvey

I found this reading in the course resources and read Chapter Nine The Possessive Spectator, This book follows the exploration of the new role of media, and how technologies play a huge role in the experience of film. In this chapter Laura explores how media creates a outlook into film, where film fans can now experience film by secondary images, posters, images, all give in outlook into the apperance of a film and what is yet to come.

"With electronic or digital viewing, the nature of cinematic repetition compulsion changes."
this line makes me think how digital and new technolgy how changed how we interpt film, projection of images have changed in the retrospect of how a film is presented in comparison to how films were first developed, and its this comparison that Laura makes that directs my interest into cinema before there was higher developed technolgy.
Thinking Forward...

By exploring Larry, and Lauras work and there interpetation of cinema and cinematic skills, makes me think of ideas that deal with persepction and perspective, where looking at the idea of colour theory in Larrys work, has drawn my interest into how these colours become so intertwined in the idea of cinema and cinematic space. The apsect of what colours make up and how as the viewers these colours tell us a story deeper into cinema

Is there a way to highlight this exploration, Im hoping my site visit and creating a cinematic site sequence on Wednesday will draw my thinking deeper into this theory.

Site Visit

Wednesday 27.07
When first visiting the site I decided to take some photos before using my device to interpt the way my device will manipulate the perspectives of the site, walking through the site, I started to notice a lot of artwork that centres around this site that I had never noticed before.

I had always used this site as a means of transportation, a way to get from A to B when walking through central Auckland, but had never stopped to admire how vibrant the art work makes the site feel. After my site exploration and device seqence I would love to explore what all this artwork represent.

Cinematic Device
I started by using my main device, which is the kalidescope that uses a sound mapping program to create a visual dynamic between the site perspective and the sounds created in site.

I found it very interesting to see the connection between site and the sounds created in site, where it felt almost like a reverse kalidescope where the sound mapping it creating the variation

I took a variation of videos, that show the sound mapping in the space used in my device. These videos allowed me to see how the space changes and how I can show a record of that variation in the space. I wonder if there is a way I can try and create this varitaion of a chnaging space into a cinematic space.

- variation of perspective
- change in colour sound and space

I also made a second device that was a kalidescope without the sound mapping perspective, I made this second device so I could also explore how the site visuals stand on there own, how this works in conjuction with and without the sound mapping.

I found exploring just using the kalidescope to change the perspective helped me to focus on just the visual aspects of site, using this exploration to focus on the physical aspects of site. This exploration made me think into the textures, and surfaces of the site of fort lane. Where I focused on taking photos that highlight a specifc aspect of the site, how does this change my thinking and view when looking through the kalidescope.

Night Exploration

I decied to take my device to the site at night, to try and explore specific aspects of light and darkness within the site, this exploration will help me to look at the site in a different light, focusing of specifc aspects that arent shown during the day

I feel that by going back to the site at night gave me more variation into looking at different aspects of the site, using my device and taking a lot of photos that focus on variation within the site, where these aspects have helped me to have a lot of media to start to develop a site sequence.

Wednesday 27.07
When entering class we were supposed to have some site sequences developed in order to use the projectors and films in class to explore new concepts, because I had taken these photos the more of this class the only content I had developed was my unedited photos.

We had examples shown of site seqences and ideas we could explore, where we were encouraged to go get some transparency paper to print our images on to develop an idea for our site sequences. I started by selecting images for my first site sequence and printing them on transparency paper.

when printing on transparency paper, they all printed in black in white, which was a different perspective of looking at my site images, but I feel that I need to redo this in colour to translate a different affect

I used the lightbox to get the full affect of the transparecy paper, the light box had a frame which reminded me of film camera shutter, using this to isolate certain perspectives within my images.

This site sequence made me think about the exploration behind layering, and how I could layer these transparecy papers. Where I started to pull from my exploration into Larry Bells work, where I want to explore the colours within each of these images, using photoshop to isolate each individual colour in my images and then can use the layering of each transparecy sheet to explore the perspectives of these colour combinations which will be the next step into my exploration.

Thinking more about ideas that consider the idea behind layering and perspectives, how can I push this deeper?
