Writing exercise to help organise the story board presentation

I started this exercise by doing a fast run through of the questions Sue wanted us to look into with our design concept, I then after this initial exercise wanted to go more into depth...

Part One

My centre for moving images focuses around the idea of perspective and movement within a space, I propose to create a community space within imperial lane, that draws in the outer community of lower queen street

I started this process by creating a kaleidoscope device that helped me see the site of fort lane in a more imaginative and explorable light, using this device to draw on aspects of perception, moving from my device I became interested in how images are layered by colour, and how this idea of layering plays with how we see an image, for my surface design I created a model that undertook these ideas and represented playing with perspective

I took this exploration as a key development into the space I want to create, where I became interested in how layering can distort and play with one perspective

Part Two

I have chosen to site my design in imperial lane, I became interested in this specific site because of how unused it was, the empty, darkness, almost made you feel you were unwelcome using this space even though it is a public walkway. I was surprised to find imperial lane connects queen street to fort street, which became a massive driver into me wanting to use this space.

I designed a facade design that stretched from fort lane through imperial lane to queen street, acting as a ceiling throughout the site

I choose cyan, magenta and yellow as these are the colours that are layered within a cinematic image, and felt the idea of perspective can change what colour the partipatants see

I have chosen to design a community space, that uses the aspect of layering and perspective to draw in the surrounding of community of queen street and fort street, becoming a break or a pause from their linear commute around lower queen street. Where I aim to create a this community space that also inhabits a communal working space for cinematic artists, where watching them create art and their exhibitions becomes a part of the display.

I have generated aspects of my entrance, facade, and how the space can be used in order to develop a sense into how I am using the site in fort lane, here I am drawing on my surface design, which will become panels when walking into the space, integrating colour and layering to produce a image seen at a specific perspective

Part Three

Imperial Lane is forgotten, unused and dismissed becoming another part of Tamaki Makaurau that is lost within the buildings, my design allows this space to be reborn and become a space for community and artists to come together, a space for individuals to feel welcomed in their own city

Reflection

Being able to iterate the prospects of my design concept helped me to visualise the main aspects of my design. Where I now am able to generate a story board that tries to visualise all the aspects of my storyboard,

I am wondering what aspects of my community bar/ centre I am going to show as at the moment I have along come up with the concept but not the internal aspects of my design, where I only have small drawings and collages of the ideas I have come up with, where I think at the moment I want my story board to be digitally rendered, where as most of the aspects of my idea are still undecided it may be hard to finalise what it might look like digitally.

First Renders

I layered the glass in a repeating pattern, pink, yellow blue

in the renders I becoming interested in the colours that were created through the three colours, I could see orange, green, red, purple

The black was created from the low samples used to render and the high amount of glass used

Feedback from Storyboard Presentation

I found this very helpful, I was very nervous for my presentation and felt very overwhelmed because of other personal problems that were going on that day, when describing my design concept I felt I didn't get all of the aspects I wanted to talk about and highlight in the given time

Overall my feedback was really good,

- how will the parametric facade design actually work, what components will I use to make this design possible, will the aspects of the components take away from the organic design?

- how will you direct people into the space, could their be a sense of direction or something immersive to make your design more directed?

- MAKE IT MORE IMMERSIVE!! why just the ceiling? could it extend down to be more of an immersive space

This feedback really made me think about my design and how I could push it more, where throughout the mid-semester break my plan is to make a ton of initial ideas and concepts and find ways to push my design further.

Baovan, Spain, 2022

Clap Studio

I came across the interior design by Clap Studio for the Baovan restaurant in Spain, I was interested in how the space created an immersive customer experience, where this becomes more than just a hospitality space.

After this crit I wanted to find ways that could make me see my project in a new light, the way Clap Studio has designed this ceiling installation that represents clouds, and how the wind and changing environment shows the movement of these clouds through the space.

I was inspired by how transformed this space is and a whole new culture is built from the interior

Moving Forward - Mid Semester Break

after the feedback I started to refine my idea, as when presenting it got a bit lost in translation, before designing further it felt important to my own design concept

Shifting Perspective

remaining the idea behind a 'centre for moving image' creating a space that encourages public connection and allows artists and cinematic artists to have a space to showcase and develop new art. A space that is accessible to all

main concepts of my design:

- becoming a space that is available to all

- welcomes the public in, peaking interest with the interior/exterior facade

- spaces available to all working individuals

- public laneway and bar allow the connection between all individuals

during the midsem break I need to focus on the idea of going into more deepth
