Week Three
Surface Design
Monday 01.08
This week we started by presenting our device and site sequences, learning about the concepts other students had explored and diving deeper into how to expand on our ideas.

Learning about other peoples ideas helped me to branch further into my thinking, and developing further past my thinking. After reviewing each others work we went into a surface design workshop, during this excerise we started to quick fire create some models that represent surface design, where we used this exercise to devloped further into the concepts behind surface design

First Design...

I generated this model using mirrior bored and heat, thinking of how I can warp the material to different forms to make something flat feel distorted and defined. This first exercise consisted of a rapid fire 20 minute design, where we went and present out work in comparisom to the resent of the class.

Second Design...

I wanted to continue my exploration using mirror board, where this time I incorparated cellopane as a second dimeson to my surface design, how in contrast with the mirror board the cellophane reacts with the light and adds depth to my design, making me think further to how something reflective and something transparent can be used to generate a new concept to a surface.

Third Design...

For my final rapid design model I started to explore etching on the surface, and the reaction between a distorted mirror surface. I was able to create two models in this process as it was a simple yet affective process, using snad paper to echt the surface where I incorparated a lot of process I used in my previous surface design models in order tp push further past.

I found this exercise really helpful when it came to thinking and experiement with different surfaces, exploring towards reflective surfaces as it seems to be what peaks my interest when working with materials, moving forwards I want to focus on how I can expand my ideas past just a reflective surface, I want to look at different artist models that experiment with the idea of relfection and transparency and how they have expand this idea into a project.

After generating our surface designs, we collectively show cased all our surface designs we had generated, I found it really interesting to be able to see what everyone had generated and created, and how there we are lot of similarities with how we developed our surface designs. Sue talked through some interesting designs, and said that if we see any surface designs that peak our interest to not be afraid to take inspiration and expand on these

I found a couple surface designs developed by others, espically the one where it almost felt like a cave experience, the layering of the ripped paper added shados and dimesons to a flat surface with I found really interesting.

Moving forward from this exercise I wanted to develop further taking inspiration from some of the surface designs I had seen in class, and how could I incorporate this into combination with my own thinking...

Developing further into my surface design exploration where I focused on the aspect of transparency, I felt drawn to the curve shape that was explored in our surface design exercise in class, where I used a plastic sheet and a lighter to melt in order to manipulate the shape the flat material. I found it interesting how by melting this material it created holes in the surface, almost like voids in the surface.

I became interested in the shadows that this surface design developed, and how the smoke burns on the plastic created a dinemson to these shadows.

I started to devlope further and found myself drawn to reflective materials... again... and how light and shadows are manipulated by these surfaces. I used tinfoil and imprinting it on my heater, where this created a model that reminded me of iron bars, or corogated iron, where this surface design became quite interesting in the fact it was generated from a common house hold object, and turned into a surface design and model.

I also went back and explored the manipulation of mirror board using the same technique as before but this time melting a layer of plastic film on top, this created a second surface to the surface design almost acting as a second barrier to the mirror board which I found quite interesting

This surface design was really insipring to me, this building creates a false sense of reality almost like a dream world as the exterior walls are frosted and transparent. This structure is a branching concrete frame, lined with perforated bamboo and matte white glass.

This building was inspired by its historic site, which is situated next to the St. Bartholomew the Great Church. The panels of colour placed throughout the building create a colour facade when light shines through the glass. This creates a playful affect to the building, The relationship between the facade the space creates and the power of the site, creating a space that inflicts joy and lifts up sprits of its inhabitants.

When first seeing this surface design I became interested in the fact that it looks like fabric threads surronding the building, where the architects have used coloured chains, cascading the building in order to promote the relationship of the country and transmit the heritage and culture of the country.

With the site this building stand out amond the rest, it draws attention to itself, becoming a surface design you remeber. I became interested in how this design has come to life and how the surface creates an illusion.

The way the light is manipulated through the metal grate really interested me, where the shapes are all different and distort the sun coming in the windows. This building gives off a professional look in relation to the site and materials used. This surface design makes me think of how I could expand on this type of distortion

Surface Design Exploration

I became interested in the ideas of layering within an image, separating the colours within an image to develop a new aspect to how images are created. I started to think of how in cinematic process there is a process around using magenta, cyan, and yellow as the underpinning colours to an image/video

This exploration allowed me to explore the idea behind colours within an image, how these images go from black and white to colour, what is hidden behind the surface of each image
