Holland Power

Mid Semester Break

I stared by going back to site, trying to see it from a different perspective and looking for aspects of the site I may have over looked

I sat in fort lane and started to notice the texture within the bricks, the plaster that is laid overtop that cracks along the sides, how this smooth plaster over top of the bricks is not one consistent colour.

All the bricks are different colours which is something I find really interesting, something I want to translate in my final renders

Imperial Lane is a beautiful Historic building that was redesigned by Fearon and Hay, the concept behind my idea is to transform Imperial Lane but still keep the atmosphere and feeling of Imperial Lane alive. By using glass as my main material for my interior facade, the bricks of imperial lane still become seen, distorted through the colours but the texture remains

moving forward I want to find ways to make this atmosphere of imperial lane apparent in my final drawings and renders

using

- lighting
- shading
- textures
- colour

ensuring my renders still translate the the building within my design

key moments and textures that became an interest point when exploring imperial lane, I feel every time I revisit the site I discover something new and different that I had previously overlooked
Ideation Interior facade

Eyebeam Museum
Architect:diller scofidio + renfro | Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio

When talking to Sue about my interior glass facade design she suggested I look at this project, I became very interested in how the structure acts a separation to the building, and how the flow of the design evokes the connectivity of the building, from this I started to think how can I use this type of principle to add to the comments Sue made about my design, to make the design more "immersive" and to transform the color-field of my design

I started to explore this idea in more ideation, using sketches to get out my ideas on paper

I started to experiment with using a design that would connect on oppitsite sides of each level, making each level connected by the interior facade, this ideation become a starting point into exploring more options, where I took to grasshopper to design further and experiment with more options

The curves in the design are chosen by taking the curves of the contour lines around the surrounding area of Auckland central, this started to generate a meaning behind the chosen curves, and how this determines the gradient of the designs

Through my experiementation on Rhino, I became interested in how when I change one curve it affects the whole design,

From sues comments I started to think how can this be more IMMERSIVE
where I started to think what if both sides of the glass interior came down, but through this exploration it felt very harsh, where I wanted the interior to work together with the building to develop a new perspective

From this I went back to my brainstorming and on my inspiration from the eye beam building, focusing on one side of the glass interior going down the wall, I like how this possibility of the one side glass allowed for the distortion of the bricks but still kept the building exposed on the side that wasn't cover from here I started to more forward into more exploration of this concept

starting to explore more with colour and using rhino shader to imagine different types of colour fields, I started playing with more in depth versions of my first initial proposal which was pink, yellow, blue repeating in a pattern where here I choose to do 3 shades each of pink, yellow and blue in order to create a more in depth colour field
Programming

I started to think of how I would programme the space, starting to think of ways I could interconnect each floor to create flow in the space

Considering each factor that could elevate the flow of Imperial Laneco

- light wells, taking out the light well? creating balcony
- using stairwells to interconnect each floor, I started with exploring stair wells where it became a prominent way I started to determine the space

I started to think maybe adding a stairway that went up the middle of the floors, becoming a focale point to each floor

I started to plan out floor layouts for the cafe, and how the functionality of the cafe could work

I wanted to keep the bar connected into the interior facade, in order to keep the flow continued in the space, I started to think about maybe making the bar counter top out of the same coloured class so this becomes interconnected into the facade, and how I could develop on this

I started to develop a check list of what I wanted to have within each floor, I feel my design has shifted more to a communal working space, where I would use the facade to connect with each floor,

The bottom floor will be the public laneway/cafe
this will need

- bar
- seating for at least 50 people (200 people event space)
- toilet
- entry from queen street
- entry from fort lane

The first floor will have
- open working space
- toilet
- individual work space
- communal kitchen
- longue area

Second Floor
- workshops
- open studio
- public facilities

I have generated this check list to keep me on track for my design, although it is only mid sem break this check list will most likely change through my design development

stair options,

moving from this and going into week 8 next week, I wanna make sure to get feedback from sue after finalising everything

asking questions if my programming reads well, how can I push this more, does my design so far reflect the feedback that was given in Week 7

when exploring stair options I started to think about could I use the same princple for the chairs as I have for the interior glass instalation, creating a parametic design that extends down??
Week 9 Checklist

- Talk to Sue, get feedback
- Finalise programming
- Model finished
